Japan’s CPI moderated in January, despite strong energy prices

The reference inflation rate in Japan, which excludes the impact of the volatility of the price of fresh food, stood at 0.2% in January, which represents a deceleration of three tenths compared to the year-on-year increase of 0.5% observed in December 2021, according to the Japanese Government.

The general inflation rate registered a year-on-year increase of 0.5% in January, compared to the increase of 0.8% in the previous month. On the other hand, the underlying rate, which in addition to the price of fresh food also excludes energy prices, fell by 1.1% after falling by 0.7% in December last year.
