Japanese investment in Spain: a shift toward sustainability and technological innovation

In recent years, Japanese investment in Spain has undergone a strategic shift aligned with major global trends. According to the Business Climate Spain–Japan report, produced by the Japan–Spain Business Circle (CEJE), Japanese capital flows—historically tied to the automotive sector—have moved into industries such as chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and more recently have been shifting toward sectors that are key to the economic future: renewable energy and digitalization.

Spain has established itself as an attractive destination for clean-energy projects thanks to its natural conditions and the European regulatory framework that promotes decarbonization. It is no coincidence that the power sector has reached record figures: in 2021 alone, Japanese investment in renewables reached €792 million, confirming Japan’s interest in positioning itself in an increasingly demanding European market. This move is not new: major corporations such as Mitsubishi had already begun investing in renewables in Spain at the start of the century, and today that trend is becoming even more firmly established.

The second major pillar is digitalization. In 2021, Japanese investment in the IT sector reached €500 million, establishing this area as one of the cornerstones of bilateral cooperation. The report confirms that, alongside the automotive industry, chemicals, and renewables, information technology is seen as a key sector in which Japan is willing to compete and grow in the coming years.

This repositioning also reflects a context of growing international competition. China and South Korea are strengthening their presence in Europe, especially in electric vehicles and clean energy. In response, Japanese companies are seeking to differentiate themselves by bringing innovation, reliability, and a long-term perspective—values that are central to their business culture. For Spain, this investor profile represents not only capital, but also a strategic partner capable of providing trust and stability in an increasingly competitive environment.

Beyond the figures, the shift in Japanese investment toward renewables and digitalization reflects a strategy aligned with global challenges. For Spain, this direction represents a highly valuable opportunity: access to technology, the creation of skilled jobs, and the support of a partner that brings solidity at a time when the energy transition and digital transformation are shaping the global agenda.

Ultimately, Japanese investment in Spain is no longer limited to traditional sectors. Today it sets out a clear roadmap: to support the green transition and digital transformation—two pillars that will be decisive for the economy in the decades ahead.
