The Jury of the 2023 Princess of Asturias Award for Letters has bestowed the award on Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. The jury has valued, among other things, “his ability to reconcile Japanese tradition and the legacy of Western culture in an ambitious and innovative narrative, which has been able to express some of the great themes and conflicts of our time”.
Author of nearly thirty titles including novels, essays and short story compilations, Murakami has become a cult writer throughout his career, translated into more than forty languages. The author is, according to specialists, a disturbing writer, with a prose influenced by Dostoevsky, Dickens, Capote or Vargas Llosa.
Murakami’s candidacy for the Princess of Asturias Award was proposed by María Sheila Cremaschi, director for Spain of the Hay Festival of Literature and Arts.
Among the numerous awards received by Haruki Murakami to date are the Yomiuri Prize (Japan, 1996) and the World Fantasy Award (USA, 2006). He has also received, among others, the Asahi Prize (Japan, 2006), the Franz Kafka Prize (Czech Republic, 2006), the Jerusalem Prize (Israel, 2009), the XXIII International Prize of Catalonia (Spain, 2011) and the Hans Christian Andersen Prize for Literature (Denmark, 2016). He has been distinguished with the Order of Arts and Letters of the Spanish Government (2009).
