A delegation from the Port of Nagoya, Japan’s main port, recently visited the Port of Bilbao to strengthen commercial ties and take an interest in its projects for energy transition and its experience in breakbulk cargoes.

The Port of Bilbao currently has leading projects such as the electrification of the docks, which will allow ships to turn off their engines to reduce emissions and noise.

The Japanese delegation was made up of 30 people from the logistics, port and industrial fields. It was led by Jiro Takahashi, senior advisor to the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Yuji Kamata, executive vice president of the Nagoya Port Authority.

Andiba Ormaetxe, director of Operations, Commercial and Logistics at the Port of Bilbao, introduced the Japanese delegation to the port’s services and terminals and then toured the facilities.

“The environmental measures adopted at the Port of Bilbao are really ambitious and impressive. It is striking how many wind turbine towers and blades are stacked at its terminals, which illustrates the Port’s determination towards energy transition. Global warming is something that ports around the world must address collaboratively, and in this regard, we look forward to continuing to exchange information with the Port of Bilbao in a proactive manner,” the Japanese delegation noted.

Trade between the Basque Country and Japan, excluding energy products, represents 21% of total trade between Spain and Japan. The Port of Bilbao’s traffic with Japan recorded a strong increase in 2022 (+75%) due to the increase in imports of steel products. This country ranks fifth in the Port of Bilbao’s conventional general cargo traffics.
