Arata Isozaki, renown Japanese architect, characterized by his stylistic versatility, author of buildings such as the MOCA in Los Angeles or the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, died on Wednesday at the age of 91, on the island of Okinawa, where he had lived for a decade. Isozaki, who underwent heart surgery two years ago, suffered from lung ailments, although the cause of his death has not been disclosed. Born in July 1931 in Oita, on the island of Kyushu, the son of a poet, Isozaki graduated in 1954 and then trained with Kenzo Tange, in whose studio he worked for six years, absorbing the teachings of metabolism. However, the subsequent career of this designer, since the founding of his studio in 1963, was distinguished by versatility, as illustrated by the varied hundred or so buildings he built in Asia, Europe, the U.S. and Australia.
