The US and Japan promise to strengthen their alliance in the face of China’s maritime push

The heads of Defense of Japan and the United States, Nobuo Kishi and Lloyd Austin, have promised in a telephone conversation to strengthen their military alliance to counteract China’s push in the East Asian seas, the Japanese minister explained today.

Kishi explained that both reaffirmed the need to defend article 5 of the bilateral security treaty that urges the US to protect Japan from an attack on the Senkaku Islands (called Diaoyu by China), an archipelago in the China Sea. Oriental administered by Tokyo but claimed by Beijing.
