Japan, an attractive market for Spanish companies

CEJE, ICEX AND CASA ASIA discuss the Spanish economic presence in Japan

Last Thursday, July 14th, CEJE held the first of two events on bilateral economic relations Spain-Japan, in collaboration with the Territorial Directorate of Commerce and ICEX of Catalonia and Casa Asia.

This event, under the title “Japan, an attractive market for the Spanish company“, took place in the ICEX auditorium in Barcelona, and could also be followed in streaming. Pere Ventura collaborated in the organization of the event, who apart from participating as a speaker in the day, offered a glass of cava at the end of the event.

The main objective of the day was to disseminate the possibilities of the Japanese market for Spanish companies, bringing together the knowledge of public institutions, with the experience of the invited exporting companies. The format was divided into an institutional table and a business table, after which both face-to-face and online guests could ask questions to the speakers.

The event began with the inauguration by Mr. Fidel Sendagorta, Ambassador of Spain in Japan, who spoke a few words about the great potential of the Japanese market for Spanish companies. Mr. Sendagorta also thanked the initiative of the collaborating institutions of the event, emphasizing the importance of continuing to promote the presence of Spanish companies in Japan.

Then, at the institutional table, formed by Mr. Jorge Lasheras, president of CEJE, Mr. Amadeo Jensana, director CASA ASIA, Mr. Fernando Hernández, Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo and Mr. Joan Romero, Executive Director ACCIO, the situation of Spanish investments in Japan was discussed, and the support that institutions can offer to companies in the complex business world in Japan.

CEJE, in collaboration with CASA ASIA and ICEX, wanted to transmit not only institutional information on this day. What made the difference, with the aim of encouraging Spanish companies to explore the export and investment potential in Japan, was the business table that closed the day.

With Mr. Piergiorgo Sandri, journalist of La Vanguardia, as moderator, representatives of Spanish companies with experience in the Japanese market, had the opportunity to share with the guests, their investment strategies, their success stories and their advice. The table began with the participation of Mr. Tatsuya Kato, Director General JETRO Madrid, who explained the Japanese government’s policy of attracting foreign investment, and referred to those sectors that could be attractive to Spanish companies.

They were followed by Mr. Miguel López-Quesada, Corporate Director of Institutional Relations of GESTAMP, Mr. Pere Ventura, President of Pere Ventura, and Mr. Gonzalo Andreu, Commercial Director for Asia of Indukern F&F.

All the speakers agreed in their presentations, on the importance of finding a good partner in Japan and taking great care of this relationship. It was also highlighted how crucial it is to understand Japanese culture in order to succeed in its market, as it is a business culture that rewards loyalty, continuity and executive seriousness.

In order to be part of success stories, such as those presented on this day, Spanish companies must recognize the undoubted potential and respond to the needs of a market with great purchasing power, and that values products and services with a high added value.

Finally, both face-to-face and online guests were able to ask questions to the business table during the colloquium. We highlight Mr. Pere Ventura’s vision and his company’s approach to human values; values that he expressed as indispensable when doing business with Japan.

Once the event was over, participants and guests in person were able to enjoy a glass of cava at the ICEX facilities offered by Pere Ventura.

CEJE appreciates the collaboration of all the institutions and all the people who made possible the celebration of this event. The next day, which will take place in December, also in collaboration with ICEX and CASA ASIA, will observe the other side of the business relationship between Spain and Japan, exploring the possibilities of Japanese companies in the Spanish market.
