Hiroshima Museum of Art in Hiroshima Prefecture will host the exhibition “Picasso: The blue period & beyond” from February 4 to May 28, 2023 to celebrate its 45th anniversary. This exhibition is a joint project of the Hiroshima Museum of Art, which has one of the best Picasso collections in Japan, and the Pola Museum of Art. It is based on research into Picasso’s work that has been carried out with the collaboration of museums in Europe and the United States, and focuses on the production process with the aim of recovering Picasso’s work, which challenged the art of painting from its earliest stages. The Blue Period is the period between the ages of 20 and 23 (1901-1904), in which Picasso depicted people in predominantly blue tones and delved into themes of life, death and poverty. It was also a period in which he lived between Barcelona and Paris and dealt with mental anguish following the suicide of his close friend Casagemas. Picasso himself was also impoverished, and many of the paintings produced during this period were reworked many times on the same canvas.
